  1.  What was the role of the kaiako in this experience?

        Kaiako was teaching ‘Adjectives’ to the students. To begin the lesson, the teacher wrote down WALT and the topic of discussion on the whiteboard. 

   2. How were the children attracted to the learning experience?

       Launch (Asking questions)

      Conversations recorded 

      Kaiako- “What did we learn about adjectives yesterday ?”

      Child- We wrote about Taslim yesterday.

      Kaiako- Yes, absolutely. Today we are going to describe Koko Sheryl. We will be using different adjectives for Sheryl. So, what is          an adjective?’

     Child- “It's a describing word”.

     Kaiako- Excellent. So, adjectives are describing words”.

     Ākonga was giving responses describing Koko Sheryl. Kaiako notes down the children's responses on the whiteboard and circles the adjective -the describing word used in the sentences. 

   3. What teaching strategies were used? E.g. Questioning, problem-solving, talk moves, direct instruction?

       Talk-moves, Questioning, and direct instruction

 

   4. How did the kaiako assess learning and evaluate the teaching?

       Kaiako invites ākonga to reflect their answers to the whole group. The children were calling out their sentences. The teacher is           asking which is the describing word in this sentence followed by circling out using a different color pen. The students were                 instructed to do their independent writing describing Koko Sheryl using different adjectives. The kaiako support ākonga in their         writing.

 

    5. What were the links to the NZC?

        Creates texts by using visual and graphic-phonic sources of information

 

    6. How did the kaiako adapt their planning in response to children’s needs and capturing teachable moments?

  •  Read writing to self- Ākonga are reading their writing to self 

  • Check for full stops and capital letters- Ākonga are adding full stops and capital letters to their writing and reading their stories again to make sense.

  • Read to a buddy- Ākonga are reading their stories to a buddy 

  • Self-assessment of SC- Ākonga are giving a tick or circle their describing words in the sentence. 

  • Share if time- Ākonga sharing their writing in a group. Kaiako provides positive feedback for their contribution.
